Beta Testing Your App
How to run a useful beta — recruiting the right testers, giving them a real reason to show up, and shipping weekly changes based on what they say.
Recruit for engagement, not size
Twenty engaged testers who reply weekly beat 500 signups who never open the app. Recruit small on purpose.
The best testers are people who have already told you the problem you solve is real. Start with your DM history, your community lurkers, and the founders in your circle who nod when you describe the pain point.
Give testers a real reason to show up
- Direct access to you. A dedicated Discord/Slack channel, or a founder email that gets a same-day reply.
- Lifetime discount or grandfathered pricing. Concrete, remembered forever.
- Public credit. Named in the launch post or changelog when a change ships from their feedback.
- Visible shipping. Weekly updates on what you shipped from their input. This is the single strongest retention lever.
The weekly beta rhythm
- Ship one meaningful improvement each week — not 10, not zero.
- Post a weekly changelog inside the tester channel with what shipped and what's next.
- Talk to 2 testers 1-to-1 each week — 20-minute recorded calls.
- Publish a monthly "here's what we learned" post outside the beta group. It doubles as public content and recruitment for the next cohort.
FAQ
- How many beta testers do I need?
- 20–50 engaged testers beat 500 disengaged ones. You want enough for signal but few enough to talk to each one personally. Under 20 and the sample is too small; over 100 and you can't process the feedback.
- How do I find beta testers for my app?
- Recruit from communities where your ICP already lives — subreddits, Discord servers, Indie Hackers, X. Offer a real benefit (early access, lifetime discount, direct line to the founder). Warm intros convert 3–5× better than cold posts.
- How long should a beta run?
- 4–8 weeks is standard. Long enough to see week-2 retention and multiple release cycles, short enough to keep the group engaged. Anything over 12 weeks and testers ghost.
